For about 300 years, the Apaches were the most formidable warriors of the American Southwest. An Athabascan tribe with strong family ties and deep religious beliefs, the Apaches migrated to the Southwest in the 10th century, and were among the first tribes to fight the invading Europeans. Led by legendary chiefs including Geronimo and Cochise, they defeated numerically and technologically superior forces of Spanish, Mexican, and US troops. US army officers, battle-hardened in the Civil War, found the Apaches the greatest American Indian fighters. The Apaches were never conquered.
